Jean Louise Finch is a young white girl.
Most people in Alabama town, Maycomb knows her as Scout. She lives with his
brother named Jeremy Atticus Finch also known as Jem and his father named
Atticus Finch. Atticus is a lawyer in this sleeping town and this is the reason
The Finch is totally different from other families if being compared in
education matter. In every summer, there is one boy named Charles Baker Harris
but has been called as Dill. Dill is a nephew of Atticus’s neighbour named Miss
Rachel Haverford. The boy from Meridian will come to Maycomb every summer and
stays with his aunt. As his aunt house is the next door of Atticus’s house,
Dill becomes a friend of Jem and Scout.
In this town, there is one story about The
Radley that lives in Radley Place. According to the rumours, Mr. Radley has
been killed by his own son by a pair of scissors. The name of the boy is Arthur
Radley. His nickname is Boo Radley. Boo Radley is an inside boy. He is never
getting out from his house. Some rumours said that Boo Radley is a monster but
not human because of it. Jem, Scout and their friend Dill fascinated with this
story and they want to explore by themselves so that they know more about the
story or Boo Radley himself. Jem, Scout and Dill plan luring him out from his
house. One day, those kids write a note about getting ice cream with them and
throw the note through the window of that spooky house by using a fishing pole.
However, Atticus catches them and angry at them as they are making fun of a sad
man. Later, the children try to sneak over to the house again and look through
its window. Nathan Radley, a brother to Boo Radley who lives in the house with
Boo hears something and shoots the kids. The children run away but Jem losses
his pants in a fence as in a chaos situation, he tried to escape. In the middle
of the same night, Jem goes back to the fence and finds that his pants has been
mended.
When September comes, Dill has to go back
to Meridian and Scout is getting ready for school. This is the first time ever
for her going to school. On their (Jem and Scout) way to school, they have to
pass a tree near to Radley that often left gifts in a knothole of the tree such
as pennies, chewing gums and soap carved figures of Jem and Scout. These kids
do not know where those gifts are coming from. When they are about to give a
note to the secret giver, they find that Nathan Radley has plugged up the hole
with cement.
Winter comes over Maycomb brings unexpected
cold and snow. One night, Miss Maudie’s house is on fire. In that kind of
situation, someone has put a blanket on Scout in order to protect her from the
fire. But, Scout does not know who did it. Later, she knows that Boo Radley is
the one who put it on her when she was looking on the fire after being asked by
Atticus.
Besides Boo Radley rumour, Maycomb is
attacked by an ugly matter named racism. This spirit is caused by white people
in the town. However, not all of white people in the town hate black people.
Atticus as a white man decides to defend a black man named Tom Robinson that
has been accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell, a member of very
poor family in the town and most people call the family as “trash”. The Finch
has to face a heavily racist since Atticus decided to defend a black man. No
matter what happens, Atticus sticks with his decision as deep in his heart, he
knows that Tom is not guilty and has been abused by The Ewell. Scout and Jem
also have to face this heavily racist because of his father’s decision. At a
family Christmas gathering, Scout beat up her aunt’s grandson named Francis
after he said Atticus is a “nigger-lover”. Besides, Jem has cut off the top of
his old neighbour named Mrs. Dubose’s camellia bushes after she said something
bad about Atticus. As a punishment for doing that, Jem has been punished to
read a book for Mrs. Dubose every day for a month. Actually, Mrs. Dubose is
morphine addicted and she tries to break it. Jem does not realize about this
until Mrs. Dubose died that he is actually trying Mrs. Dubose to break her
addicted. He knows about this right after being told by Atticus when Atticus
gives him a box from Mrs. Dubose that lies a camellia.
One summer, Scout is waiting for Dill in
Maycomb but that boy does not appear. But, he sends a letter saying that he has
a new father now and he can’t go back to Maycomb as before again. However, one
night, Scout discovers Dill under her bed. Dill explains that he decides to run
from Meridian because of lacking attention from his parents. The time for the
trial draws closer, Atticus’s sister named Alexandra comes and stays with all
of them in Maycomb in order to shape Scout to be a better girl. A night before
the trial, Tom is moved to the country jail. Atticus looks fear about the trial
as he stands guard outside the jail all night. Jem, Scout and Dill concern
about Atticus’s condition and three of them sneak into the town to find him.
Later then, they find him sitting while reading a newspaper in front to the
jail. A group of men arrive to cause some violence towards Tom and threaten
Atticus to not defend the black man. At first, Jem, Scout and Dill from
distance but then Scout goes into the middle of those men because she senses
danger. Standing in the group of men, Scout recognizes a father of her
classmate named Walter Cunningham. She asks Mr. Cunningham to send her regard
to his son. Scout actions cause Mr. Cunningham ashamed and he and those men
leave.
During the trial, according to the white
Ewell family, Mayella asks Tom for some help in the house while her father was
out. Later then, Tom beat her up and rapes her before being caught by her father,
Bob Ewell. But, this is totally opposite with Tom’s evidence saying that
Mayella asks him to help her lifting a box from her dresser. She is the one who
hugs Tom and asks Tom to kiss her. Suddenly, Bob appears and beat up his own
daughter while Tom fled. According to the sheriff’s testimony, Mayella has got
bruises on the right side of her face which means she was most likely to be
punches by someone’s left hand. Tom’s left hand is useless since he was a boy
because of an old accident while Bob Ewell as everyone knows, leads with his
left. Even though Atticus already gave impressive evidence showing that Tom is
not guilty, but the jury saying that he is guilty because of the jury is a
white person. Tom is sent to the jail and facing his death when he is trying to
escape.
The case has done but Bob Ewell feels
Atticus has made fool of him. Bob wishes for revenge. Bob threatens Atticus and
the people that connected to the case. One night on Halloween night, Jem and
Scout go to school to celebrate the party. On their way to go back home, Bob
Ewell attacks them. Jem is hurt but Scout is fine. Suddenly, there is an
unknown person tries to save both of the kids. In order to save the kids, the
unknown person needs to kill Bob. Otherwise, that person will not succeed. They
are finally at home. Scout knows that the unknown person is Boo Radley since
this is her first time sees Boo’s face. Atticus calls the sheriff to his house
to talk about this matter. The sheriff decides to bear in mind that Bob was
tripped over a tree roots and fell on his own knife in order to save Boo. As he
said, Tom Robinson died for no reason because of this man and this man has to
pay it. Later then, Boo goes back to his home and Scout has never seen him
again since that incident.
